Overview
This resource ‘A Resource for Political Speeches’ has been curated to showcase some of the most widely known and influential political speeches in history. Political speeches are frequently used within voice and actor training as a vehicle to better understand rhetoric and the art of persuasion.
A political speech offers the speaker an opportunity to explore intentions and objectives, with relative stakes or consequences, whereby they must convince their audience of their ambition. Political speeches are often written in a way that incorporates a sense of story, using literary and rhetorical devices to persuade and influence their audience to think, feel, and act upon the narrative of the speech.
There are many tools the voice actor can draw upon to do this, and an understanding of rhetoric, utilising devices such as artistic proof like Logos, Pathos and Ethos will help the speaker amplify and refine their delivery. The voice artist should then consider aesthetics of delivery and the power of speed, volume, pitch, resonance and other vocal choices to convey their message. A deeper understanding and application of sentence structures, phrases, and thoughts help to bring clarity to a speech. Though emphasising choices words or moments in the speech, the speaker is able to guide and navigate the listener through a specific route of the whole journey.
