Course Overview

Received Pronunciation or RP as it’s more frequently referred, is one of many accents located in the United Kingdom, specifically within the region of the south of England. It is quite the iconic accent, which is often thought to be undeniably British (especially to non-british people). As with all accents, the features and qualities of Received Pronunciation sit on a scale from heightened Elizabethan and Victorian ages through to modern day standard neutral english.

This course focuses on a General Received Pronunciation, a middle marker between heightened and standard neutral. This is a great place to start with the RP accent, and will help introduce you to the key characteristics and pronunciation features of this accent, which you can then adapt and modify to meet the needs of the character you are exploring.

Your Course At A Glance.

As you move through this course we encourage you to immerse yourself in the work and then refine as we progress. In my approach to accent training and development, I always encourage you to GO BIG and build the detail later. Most of the work will be new and in my many years of experience teaching accents, the greatest obstacle that students come up against is the fear of failing, offering a sound that doesn’t fit the accent, and being afraid of becoming a caricature. We need to move out of our own way and push those fears to the side if we are ever going to progress, so go big, be messy, and make bold choices.

As you move through the work, you will notice there is a lot of repetition. This helps us to reinforce the learning and build skills. There will also be lots of crossover and exercises explored from the other courses OnVoice Academy offers. Again, this gives you more opportunity to reinforce your understanding and apply the skills you are developing in a practical way.
